Iraq has gone through many humanitarian crises in the modern era that led to the displacement of thousands of people from their homes as a result of military battles such as the eight-year war with Iran, the Gulf War, Desert Storm (1991-1992), the economic blockade (1991-2003), and then last war in (2003) that led by the United States of America. After SEDO’s establishment in July 2007, one of its objectives and mandates is to support the marginalized and vulnerable groups in Iraq and enable them to be active in the development of the local economy and respond to any humanitarian crisis to face any risk of economic collapse at the local market level. SEDO had a fundamental and effective role in the humanitarian response during more than one crisis, including assisting the displaced during the civil war in Iraq (2007-2009) and the displacement of Fallujah and Ramadi peoples (2013-2014) and during the largest humanitarian crisis in Iraq and military battles in north and middle of Iraq (2014-2022). During these crises, more than a million displaced and returnees have been responded to in various humanitarian sectors, including the WASH sector. SEDO implemented more than (12) WASH projects, about (12) projects were pure WASH sectoral projects and (2) projects were multi-sectorial projects including the WASH sector. SEDO has WASH expert who is responsible for design the activities, develop the WASH tools and manuals inside SEDO, and provide technical support for the WASH projects teams.
Target Groups and locations:
IDPs, returnees, host communities, refugees, and remainees from different ages, sects, and location. SEDO targeted them in the camps, off camps, in the informal settlement, and inside citites and villages. SEDO implemented WASH activities in each of Nineveh, Salahaddin, Kirkuk, Diyala, Anbar, Basrah, and Baghdad provinces.
Nature of Activities:
• In Water sector; SEDO provided water trucking for IDPs and returnees inside and off camps, install and operate ROs on household and community levels, rehabilitation and maintenance of water treatment plants, support the water quality through supplying water test kits and chlorine for the management of the water treatment plants, install and rehabilitation of water networks on community and household levels, capacity building for local authorities and local community, and rationing water use. • In sanitation sector; SEDO conducted desludging , install and operate new sub tanks for sanitation, rehabilitation of sanitation facilities on household level, rehabilitation of sanitation facilities inside the schools and health centers, solid and water waste management, cleaning campaigns, and capacity builiding of local authorities and community in sanitation sector. • In hygiene sector; SEDO distributed different kind of hygiene kits for IDPs, returnees, female, disabled, and refugees, also conduct hygiene awareness through schools and health centers for the target community, conduct CHAST and MHM inside the schools and health centers, capacity building for local authorities and community, cash for hyiegen, and response for COVID_19 emeregency by awareness raising about how applying.
