Iraq has gone through many humanitarian crises in the modern era that led to the displacement of thousands of people from their homes as a result of military battles such as the eight-year war with Iran, the Gulf War, Desert Storm (1991-1992), the economic blockade (1991-2003), and then last war in (2003) that led by the United States of America. After SEDO’s establishment in July 2007, one of its objectives and mandates is to support the marginalized and vulnerable groups in Iraq and enable them to be active in the development of the local economy and respond to any humanitarian crisis to face any risk of economic collapse at the local market level. SEDO had a fundamental and effective role in the humanitarian response during more than one crisis, including assisting the displaced during the civil war in Iraq (2007-2009) and the displacement of Fallujah and Ramadi peoples (2013-2014) and during the largest humanitarian crisis in Iraq and military battles in north and middle of Iraq (2014-2022). During these crises, more than a million displaced and returnees have been responded to in various humanitarian sectors, including the Protection sector. SEDO implemented more than (8) protection projects in Iraq, about (4) projects were pure protection sectoral projects and (4) projects were multi-sectorial projects including the protection sector. SEDO has Protection and Education expert who is responsible for design the activities, develop the Protection tools and manuals inside SEDO, and provide technical support for the all Protection and Education projects teams
Target Groups and locations:
IDPs, returnees, host communities, and remainees from different ages, sects, and location. SEDO targeted them in the camps, off camps, in the informal settlement, and inside citites and villages. SEDO implemented protection activities in each of Nineveh, Salahaddin, Kirkuk, and Diyala provinces
Nature of Activities:
SEDO worked in all protection sub sectors as following:
General protection: SEDO implemented legal support for the vulnerable groups inside the detention and front the courts, civil documentationh, legal awareness, protection monitoring, and support forming the protection committiees on community level, adding to support the local authorities to response for the protection needs.
Child Protection: provide Child Firendly Spaces inside and off camps, structured and non structured PsychoSocial Support (PSS), mental health, positive parenting, case management, distribution PSS kits, cash for child protection, Child Safe Guarding activities, Child Protection awareness raising, Early childhood development activities, early childhood corners, support the caregivers, and special activities for Children Associated with Armed Forces and Groups (CAAFAG).
GBV: SEDO provided case management for GBV, provide safe spaces for victims, Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS), ans awarenes raising regarding teh GBV.
